The Brainsway® transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) system helps patients with treatment-resistant depression finally find relief from their symptoms. If other therapies haven’t helped you, this could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Millions of Americans suffer from mental health disorders, like depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and anxiety. Fortunately, many of those people find relief for their symptoms through a combination of medication and psychotherapy.

But while those treatments can be very effective, they don’t work for everyone. If you're one of the women and men in that second group, you know how frustrating it can be to look for a treatment that works for your needs.

At Cora Health Solutions, Betsy Serrano, PMHNP, offers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) using the Brainsway system to help patients with treatment-resistant conditions finally find the relief they need to improve their quality of life. In this post, learn more about TMS and what makes the Brainsway system so unique.

Quick facts about TMS

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a completely noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic currents to stimulate electrical activity in key areas of the brain. The currents are delivered through a special cap that you wear on your head throughout the course of each therapy session.

The cap is equipped with magnets that cycle on and off, delivering bursts of electrical current that helps regulate electrical activity in specific areas of your brain. These areas are largely responsible for mood and disorders like depression, anxiety, and OCD.

TMS treatment is painless and each session takes about 20-40 minutes. Most patients benefit from a series of treatments delivered over a 5-6 week period.

With research stretching back to the 1980s, TMS received FDA approval in 2008 for the management of treatment-resistant depression. Since then, TMS has received additional agency approvals for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), migraines, smoking cessation, and some types of anxiety

Brainsway TMS: How it works

The Brainsway TMS system uses deep TMS, a type of TMS designed to penetrate to wider and deeper areas of your brain. This difference enables treatment to be effective for a broader array of issues and for more resistant symptoms.

Brainsway uses a unique helmet and proprietary magnetic coil design to achieve maximum effect. The coil’s ability to deliver deeper magnetic penetration preserves more of the magnet’s energy without the need to increase the amount of energy being delivered, reducing potential side effects.

The coil’s special H-design also delivers energy more broadly, reaching additional areas of the brain’s structures while still using the same level of magnetic energy. Combined, these effects make the Brainsway system especially effective in treating depression and other brain health disorders.
